Sants'a reindeer I was sat watching a cooking programme the other day and Heston Blumenthal, a michelin star chef, was making reindeer ice-cream (from reindeer milk) and I was surprised tofind out that reindeer with antlers are female,males don't have them. So Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen are all ladies.

somehow I think the poet did not know this fact. or he knew and that's why their names are mostly not gender specific

Actually, while all female reindeer have horns, some males do too, so they all remain gender-ambiguous.
They all sound like girls to me, though. Why they have to be pulling Santa's heavy old sleigh is another question for another day...

Because they don't have to stop and ask for directions

Exactly! As if anyone wouldn't find out if Santa should ever stop and ask for directions; he knows what he's doing.
Vixen... definitely female. And why have I never even wondered about that?

i always figured there were some of each gender on santa's team. i mean, vixen, definitely female. blitzen always seemed like a boy name to me. so did donner. comet, boy, cupid girl. dancer, boy, prancer, girl. dasher...hmm...boy, i think. i think i am giving this too much thought, lol!

donner (thunder) boy
blitzen (lightening) female
Cupid = male
dasher = female (ever seen a Mom getting the kids ready for something)
dancer = female (Modern Dance...think about it.
)
prancer = male. (do I need to draw a diagram?)
vixen = female
comet = gender neutral (it's a kitchen cleaner for pete's sake)

Naw, a fic will do just fine.
I'm sure Comet would love to be in it, too.
I will never look at Santa's reindeer the same way again!
